Robert "Jones" Jahny gave us an extremely knowledgeable and humorous tour of the cellars and underground passages in Abensberg. The brewery engineer had a lot to tell us, as the 13 breweries in our town have had a lasting impact on the drinking and sociability of its citizens to this day. Huge beer cellars, mostly to the north of the city walls, were used to store the barley juice before Linde invented the refrigeration machine. 6 of them are still well preserved today. Kilometre-long tunnels connected the Carmelite monastery with the brewery cellars. The tunnels were also planned for secret supplies of provisions in the event of a siege of our town. A great topic, which was great fun for all the interested participants and showed Abensberg from its "underground" side. Afterwards, as every year, we went to the Niklasmarkt in the castle garden. This is the Christmas market for locals and insiders from the region. With Maxi, District Administrator Martin, Christopher and Niklas Neumeyer and their experienced team, all participants were well looked after with the specialty Knacker mit Allem and mulled wine. As always, there was plenty to talk about and the wonderful Christmas atmosphere invited everyone to linger until late into the night. Christmas is coming...
