Hydrogen instead of natural gas?
Europe's energy supply is predominantly based on natural gas and we have an excellent gas infrastructure with a gas network that has grown over decades and a large number of huge gas storage facilities. The infrastructure offers us the opportunity to accelerate the switch from natural gas to green synthesis gas. This means that all our efforts and investments will go towards independence from crises and war zones.
The current situation of our main supplier of natural gas (50% of consumption in Germany) makes the need clearer than ever. We need strategic alliances with reliable countries with high levels of sunshine so that green hydrogen or green synthesis gas can be produced there and cover Europe's hunger for energy via existing and new pipelines. The visionary Ludwig Bölkow's concept is now 40 years old, but it is still very topical - let's produce hydrogen in the sunbelt in Africa and transport it to Europe via pipelines!
